Habitat for Humanity of Cleveland is an ecumenical ministry that builds simple, decent and affordable houses with participating families, working with diverse individuals, organizations, and faith communities to serve others. Founded on Christian principles, Habitat for Humanity is an ecumenical ministry that welcomes people of all walks of life to join in our mission. It is our long term goal to eliminate poverty housing by building simple, decent, and affordable houses in partnership with low-income families and individuals in need. Habitat for Humanity does not give houses away. Habitat provides a hand UP, not a hand OUT. Future homeowners must put in at least 400 hours of "sweat equity" labor by helping to build their own home, working on other Habitat projects, and participating in homeownership training. A $600 down payment is required before construction begins. After construction is completed, houses are sold to partnering homeowners, with zero-interest mortgages spread out over 20 -30 years in order for the payments, including taxes and insurance, to remain affordable. Their monthly payments are used to build additional Habitat houses in Bradley County.
