Cause Description:
My name is Katrina and I live in Maryland with my husband of 2 years. Fiona is a 6.5 month old puppy with hydrocephalus. Even with hydrocephalus, however, Fiona is happy, loving, and playful. However, in November, she started to have seizures indicating that we were no longer keeping the amount of fluid under control. Her condition has since gotten more complicated. Despite having her on one anti-seizure medication, and several other medications to decrease the production of spinal fluid in the brain, she continues to have seizures. Otherwise, her disposition, spirit and attitude are all great. Our vet consulted with a colleague who is a veterinary neurologist. We are going to try and adjust her medications, add on a second anti-seizure medication, and hope that we can get her in better control. However, we may be fighting an uphill battle that cannot be won, and her only hope may be surgery, which involves placing a shunt/drain in her brain that then takes the excess fluid out and dumps it in her abdomen. From there, the body the body can reabsorb the fluid. The goal is to decrease the fluid build up and pressure in the brain that is leading to all of the increased seizure activity. Surgery alone may not eradicate the problem, but there is an 80% chance that it can greatly increase her quality of life and prolong her survival. It is a very complex surgery done by a specialist and will cost several thousand dollars (close to $10,000), which I simply don't have. Without surgery, her condition will continue to deteriorate, and I will have to put her down (I won't let her suffer). With surgery, she can live as normal a life as possible, seizure-free. I need help, though. I'm doing everything I can to get donations to help her cause, and a friend of mine pointed me to this site. Will you please grant my wish, and keep Baby Fiona alive and happy?
