Cause Description:
SKS VOE, Inc. is an award-winning 501(c)(3) non- profit corporation operating in the City of Virginia Beach. In 1995, Sylvester K. Starkes and two other co-workers at Bayside High School seen a need to find a common ground amongst the students of the different communities that serviced the school. By recognizing this need, they were able to form a gospel choir "Voices of Expression" where the students were able to reconcile their differences through a shared interest of music and creating a relationship with the Lord. Moving forward, there was a greater need to expand the services we provided from just singing in order to bridge the gap of gang rivalry, homelessness, illiteracy, and family-life issues in the community. In 2001, "Voices of Expression" found the need to incorporate to move from within the realms of the high school in order to meet the greater needs of the community prompting the name change to SKS Voices of Expression, Inc. Our programs include sending out ambassadors to raise social consciousness of the issues of the cause on a local and global level, and to hold fundraising events in order to provide scholarships, immediate relief, and assistance to those suffering from chronic homelessness and domestic violence regardless of race, ethnicity, or religion.
