Beaver Creek Farm Sanctuary

Wainfleet, Ontario

Cause Description:
Beaver Creek Farm Sanctuary (BCFS) is a registered charity animal rescue that helps farm and companion animals through rescue, rehabilitation, adoption, long-term care, and education. Rescue, Rehabilitation, & Adoption Since receiving our registered charity status in January 2014, we have rescued, rehabilitated, and rehomed over 155 animals (96 dogs, 16 cats, 9 horses, 5 pigs, 13 rabbits, 2 goats, 3 alpacas, 3 chicks, and 8 ducks). BCFS focuses its efforts on animals who have been abused or neglected, heavy medical cases from the euthanasia list at local humane societies, and puppy mill survivors. We are often the only hope for elderly animals and for those with medical and/or behavioral needs. BCFS operates largely through a foster-based rehabilitation system. Our animals are cared for in loving foster homes – not in kennels – before being placed in their forever homes. These foster families help with basic obedience and socialization and show our animals what it’s like to feel loved and secure. The adoption process – involving an application, reference checks, and a home visit – aims to match the best animal to the best family. We have a 95% success rate in re-homing animals and provide ongoing training support to adoptive families for behavioral issues. Long-Term care We also have some animals who live on the farm permanently due to medical and/or behavioral issues, including Splash (a pony with no eyes), Nelly (an elderly goat with cancer and arthritis), Heidi (an elderly mini horse with dental issues – she just had dental surgery in April 2017), Elsa (a goat raised since birth at BCFS with severe frostbite to her ears requiring her to live in a heated building), and Zig (a young shih-poo mix with fear aggression who bounced around many different homes). BCFS provides ongoing care and veterinary assistance for these animals, in addition to unwavering love and comfort. Education Additionally, BCFS aims to serve as a resource in the community by promoting responsible, caring, and compassionate attitudes towards animals. This includes an emphasis on the importance of: • Regular veterinary care • Immunizations • Heartworm treatment for dogs • Nutrition • Positive behavior training • Spaying & neutering Request for Funding BCFS is run entirely by volunteers - there are no salaried employees. We receive no government funding and are completely reliant on individual donations to continue our work. 100% of the donations received by BCFS go directly to helping our animals via food and veterinary care. BCFS has developed relationships with canine/equine physiotherapists, chiropractors, reiki masters, and alternative medicine specialists – all who volunteer their time to help support the animals in the trusted care of BCFS. At this time, BCFS’s largest expense is veterinary care – care that surpasses that of many shelters and other rescues. Our mission of service to animals often includes going above and beyond basic medical care and has involved removal of tumors, dental cleanings and surgeries, surgical removal of eyes, extensive antibiotic treatment, surgery to repair a broken jaw, and heartworm treatments. These treatments are in addition to basic examinations, vaccinations, deworming, and spaying/neutering. We are therefore limited in the number of animals we can rescue because we will not refuse appropriate medical care for an animal. BCFS is seeking funding to assist in covering veterinary costs for rescue animals in our foster care program and in caring for the resident animals on the farm. Moreover, financial support would allow us to continue to grow in life-saving work, community support, education, and engagement.
