Visible Theatre, Inc. is a 501c3 nonprofit socially conscious theatre company in New York City with an educational wing dedicated to educating adults with physical disabilities in the craft of acting and original performance. The emphasis is on artistry, not disability. At present,Visible Theatre, Inc. has received a second grant from the Dept. of Cultural Affairs to help support its True Story Project. The True Story Project is an original performance tapestry featuring the true life stories of 30 or so disabled adults. The adults receive professional acting training and discover their stories through journaling exercises. In April of 2002, the True Story Project will travel to various residential buildings in NYC housing mostly people with disabilities and the elderly. The True STory Project works against sentimentalized stereotypes regarding people with disabilities and their common exclusion from the world. This program employs the vehicle of theatre to help the largest, most invisble minority become visible and effectice advocates for the disabled and their potential. Additional funding is being sought for teaching staff.
